5 Performance evenings from Mon16th to Fri 20th September at Catalyst Arts, from 6pm to 8pm, each evening.
An informal Roundtable discussing the beginning of Performance Art in Northern Ireland, with former University of Ulster Fine Art staff, hosted by Brian Connolly in Pollen Studios, on Wed 18th Sept at 11am.
AAA namely, Alastair MacLennan, Andre Stitt and Adrian Hall embody 3 artists who were part of a larger interest group of active personnel at the University of Ulster who helped incubate and foster an important genesis for the development of Performance Art in Northern Ireland.
Alastair MacLennan born 1943, Scotland, has been making ‘Actuations’ his word to describe his life/work relationship with performance art since 1970 and since 1975 taught at the now University of Ulster until 2007. He is recognized as an international performance artist and is a member of Black Market International, a performance collective, since 1989. MacLennan represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1997.
Andre Stitt born 1958, Belfast, began making performances in1976 when still at college. Between1980 and1999 he was mainly based in London, traveling internationally solely making performances where he gained a reputation for provocative and politically challenging work. In 1999 he moved to Cardiff when he began teaching and is now Professor of Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art and Design.
Adrian Hall born 1943 Cornwall, is a polyvalent multi-disciplinary artist/teacher using many approaches to the art making process, came to teach at the then Ulster Polytechnic from 1972 to 1978 encountering Beuys in Belfast in 1974. Hall’s creative approaches to art making was very influential for then students. After leaving Belfast he taught in Australia and New Zealand where he currently resides.
