Drawing on Homi Bhabha’s notion of the ‘third space’—where cultural meaning is negotiated rather than fixed—this live performance explores the tensions between heritage and innovation, collective memory and individual expression.

Fort Dunree—a site where military history intersects with contemporary art—serves as the starting point for Rebecca Strain and Martha McCulloch’s 2023-24 body of work. This live performance emerges from that exploration, seeking a space between past and present, individual and society.

This durational performance event is a meditation on desire and (self) determination.

These acts transfigure something that has no inherent sexual value into something invaluable, something unquantifiable, something that evades language. The mundane is imbued with erotic charge through devotion. Rice is not boiled and eaten, but knelt on for hours. Water is suspended and held between lips.

Join us on Sunday 21 September from 2-5pm to explore the process of perversion. Each performance is a clear deviation from the expected way of using objects or engaging with this world.

The performances will take place simultaneously. This is a relaxed performance and audience members are welcome to come and go.
