Jennifer Ng
Jennifer Ng is a Singaporean-born interdisciplinary artist based in the UK. Her practice explores the complex relationship between being and place.
Jennifer received her first formal art education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore), where she majored in traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy and seal-carving. While rooted in these traditional disciplines, her practice has evolved over the years to embrace a process-oriented and research-based approach. Today, she works predominantly in performance and painting. These practice trajectories enable her to explore ideas associating with 'displacement', 'belonging', and 'becoming'. Using Chinese ink, a material she considers as embodying the ineffable, she develops imagery that evokes deep, embedded emotions that resonate over time.
Jennifer holds a doctorate in practice-led research from the Birmingham School of Art (United Kingdom), and a master's degree in art education from the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). She is recently selected for the ‘Flesh as Witness’, and the ‘In-Between’ residencies at Live Art Ireland.
Drawing on personal and shared experiences, I aim to create a broader dialogue about loss, displacement, and estrangement. Embodied practices often bring a familiar strangeness, even comfort, in ways that bodily engagement and contextual disruptions open portals into something else. With such physicality, materiality becomes central to my practice. I am interested in how materials translate inner dialogues through performative practices. A recurring material in my work is the Chinese ink. For me, the material possesses an affective aspect to evoke indescribable emotions. While associated with the ancient history of thought and language, it embodies a language of non-language, speaking through its seepages, immensity, and uncompromising blackness.
